GENESIS FARMS

GENESIS FARMS SIERRA LEONE LTD.

MISSION STATEMENT

The production of food crops in Sierra Leone is largely based on subsistence farming. An increase in the scale of production requires access to:
(1)  Essential production factors: land, light, water, seeds, chemicals and machinery.
(2)  Service providers, such as agricultural extension, suppliers of agricultural inputs.
(3)  Markets.

The supply of food to the domestic markets is largely based on imports. In addition to this national demand for food, there is a global increase in demand as well; prices for these soft commodities are increasing as a result.

The vision of Genesis Farms is that food crops could be valuable cash crops for Sierra Leone, which can be produced on a commercial basis, with production levels beyond the domestic needs of rural families. Excess production will provide income to rural families and substitutes imports of staple foods. However, a threat to mechanised farming is the increasing costs and possibly limited access to carburant.

The mission of Genesis Farms is to undertake and to promote the mechanised production of food crops as income generating cash crops, to provide market access for these products and to secure inputs required for commercial farming.

The activities of Genesis Farms will be embedded in the local communities and comply with standards of environmentally and socially responsible entrepreneurship.

OBJECTIVES

To develop the optimum production mix of seeds, farm inputs, mechanisation and labour and to achieve the break-even point for Genesis Farms within 4 years.

To promote and to support sustainable commercial farming in Sierra Leone, in co-operation with other actors in the sector.

ACTIVITIES

Genesis Farms envisages to develop a model farm, which has to be profit making within 3 years and will consist of:
(1)  A concise site at Makomp to serve as central centre for research, to train staff and to raise seedlings.
(2)  Farming sites at various locations in the Northern Province.
